The festival of Uthralikavu Pooram is celebrated annually at Sree Ruthira Mahakaalikavu Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is the most popular event of the area. It is a festival that lasts for 8 days, and its main attraction is the day-and-night march of elephants. It takes place during early summer.
Traditions
The last day of the festival is called the day of Pooram. During this festival, three teams from the temples of the neighboring villages of Enkakkavu, Wadackanchery and Kumaranellur participate in the festival. Every team presents seven elephants that are decorated with shields, trunk masks and fans. On this day 21 elephants line up with colorful parasols, peacock feather fans called Aalavattams and white tufts as used in cheerleading called Venchamarams. Traditional music is also played that ensembles that of Pandimelam and Panchavadyam and enhance the magical spell of the festival.
