The princely state of Rajasthan is synonymous with beautifully constructed palaces. and the famous Thar Desert that has transcended from being just a desert to now being an integral part of every festival celebrated in the state. The Thar Festival is a 3 day cultural extravaganza celebrated during the winters around the time of January and February, showcases some of the best cultural talent and artistic performances that is bound to put a smile on everyone’s face.
Traditions
The festival is being organized by the Tourism Department of the state of Rajasthan and brings the otherwise silent Thar Desert alive with music and dance. Amidst the yellow dunes of the desert, Rajasthani men and women come decked up in traditional costumes and sing enchanting ballads of bravery, tragedy, and romance. Music concerts are organized where each and every musician try and outdo one another making it a blissful experience for all.
Traditionally held at the golden city of Jaisalmer, the festival also sees the major participation of the “Ship of the Desert” – The camel. Camel Dances, Camel Polo, Camel Races, Camel Acrobatics, are also held that make it an avenue for uninhibited fun and laughter.
Fire dances, Tourists dances, Tug of war, Turban Tying Competitions are also held that tourists can participate and witness happening in and around the festival. Another major draw at the festival is the Mr. Desert Competitions that take place. The contest focuses on selecting one villager who has the best moustache of the most length. The contest draws a number of Rajasthani male crowd who sport some of the most long and incredibly styled moustaches. The festival also witnesses the participation of folk performers, snake charmers, acrobats, and puppeteers.

The festival is touted as one that encourages the participation of tourists across all the events and competitions held. Tourists can participate in the dance competitions and show their skills; or they can test their strength in the tug of war; or they can try their hand at tying a turban on each other. The festival also offers a unique opportunity for tourists to identify with the culture of Rajasthan and purchase some authentic handicrafts and souvenirs.
