Started in the year 1997, it is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of June, the day of Guru Purnima. It is the celebration of the river Sindhu endorsing the cultural harmony and unity of India.
Mr. Lal Krishna Advani rediscovered the flow of river Sindhu when he visited Ladakh in the year 1995. Basically, the people of the Sindhi community started the celebrations since 1997, and now, it is celebrated in Leh of Ladakh district in Jammu and Kashmir.
Traditions
The Sindhu Darshan festival is celebrated with many cultural programs. Thousands of people flock to Leh during this time to enjoy the festivities. Projecting it as a multi-dimensional cultural harmony, it also salutes the brave soldieries who protect our country. People from different states come to Leh and bring water from the rivers of their states. These waters are then submerged into river Sindhu – this mixing of waters represents the cultural harmony of India.
To promote national integrity of our country, a joint association is formed by various religious associations such as Ladakh Buddhist Association, Shia Majlis, Sunni Anjuman, Christian Moravian Church, Hindu Trust and Sikh Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee.
Fifty senior llamas perform the rituals on the banks of river Sindhu, and many cultural programmes are performed by the artists from all over the country.
