India has been blessed with some of the best music and poetic talents that date back several years in history. The Kalidas Festival is celebrated in honour of the great Indian poet, Kalidas. He has given several literary masterpieces to India, such as 'Abhijnanasakuntalam', 'Meghadootham', 'Raghuvamsam' and 'Kumarasambhavam'. The festival is celebrated usually during the month of November, wherein the people remember the works and life of Kalidas and his contribution to Indian literature.
Traditions
The sole aim of this 2-day-long festival is to hail and remember the Sanskrit poet Kalidas and his contribution to the field of Indian literature. Recalling the golden era of the Vidarbha region, the festival is conducted and organized by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Council (MTDC) and the Office of the District Collectorate of Nagpur in cooperation with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
The festival is held at a town called Ramtek (previously known as Ramgiri), which happens to have a deep association with Lord Rama. It is also believed that the beauty and tranquillity of Ramtek inspired the poet Kalidas to pen his famous composition of Meghdoot.
Over the 2 days, renowned artists from around the country enact and perform songs, dance recitals and dramas, thus celebrating the rich heritage and culture of the town of Ramtek. Plays are also conducted; they add an extra splendour to the already colourful and packed schedule.
