Encounter the Wild at Kaziranga





A Century Old National Park

Kaziranga National Park very well known as dedicated to the conservation of the one horned Rhinoceros is in the state of Assam to the North-East of India. Home for two thirds of the Rhinoceros population in the world, this century old park was declared as the World Heritage Site in the year 1985. Sudden disappearance of the one-horned Rhinoceros that roamed at the Ganga‑Brahmaputra basin led to the declaration of Kaziranga as forest reserve.

 

Creation of natural habitat to conserve the Rhinoceros also created a conducive environment for the Royal Bengal Tigers. Now Kaziranga boasts to have the highest population of the Royal Bengal Tiger in India and was declared the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve in the year 2007. Sprawling over an area of

430 sq. km, it has a diversified eco system. The grasslands, woodlands and wetlands Kaziranga National Park supports the population of Elephants, Water Buffalo, Swamp Deer, Wild Boar, Hog Deer, Leopard Cats, Civet Cats and many others.

 

With the temperature varying between 5°C and 37 °C, Kaziranga has the ideal climate for the survival of birds like Lesser White-fronted Goose, Baer’s Poached Duck, Blyth’s Kingfisher, White-Bellied Heron, Dalmatian Pelican, Spotted Pelican, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle and many others.

 

Ideal Time to Visit

The winters being the best time to visit with the temperature varying between 5°C and 25 °C, the visibility is very clear after the burning of grass. However, you can avoid the visiting around Christmas and New Year as the influx of tourist is very high.

 

Encountering the Wilderness


Kaziranga offers a unique experience to all wildlife lovers and visitors. The eco diversity is both educative and mesmerizing. To take you into the forest to get a peek at the flora and fauna of Kaziranga, many rides are organized by tour operators. The elephant rides and vehicle safari gives a closer look at the wildlife.

 

Accompanied by the armed guard, trekking is one of the very interesting option the park offers. Trekking gives you a wonderful view of the birds and eco system, which makes the visit even more memorable. Along with these activities, you can also go river cruising.

 

Local Attractions

Along with the wild Kaziranga, you can make use of the opportunity to visit the nearby attractions:

 

  • Tezpur – the historic place on the banks of river Brahmaputra, which is about 40 km away from Kaziranga
  • Hollongpar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary ‑ area for conservation of Indian Apes, which is about 26 km from Jorhat

 

Reaching and Stay at Kaziranga

Jorhat Airport is 97km from Kohora, Kaziranga and Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is located 250 km away. These are the nearest airports from where you can either travel by bus or taxi to Kaziranga. You can reach Kaziranga by taking train till Jakalhabanda (34 km from Kohora) and take a bus or taxi from there with prior arrangements.

 

Many hotels, lodges and resorts are available in and around Kohora, Kaziranga. Hotels by Assam Tourism and private hotels do provide good accommodation with prior booking. The multi cuisine restaurants provide decent food along with Assamese delicacies.
