Introduction

Guwahati is a metropolitan city in the state of Assam. Guwahati enjoys the status of being the largest and the most populated city in the Northeastern region. Guwahati is called the Gateway to the Northeastern region. Guwahati was initially known as Prajyotishpura, or the city of Eastern Light. The capital of Assam, Dispur, is located within the city of Guwahati. The city of Guwahati is located on the bank of River Brahmaputra and the foothills of Shillong Plateau. Guwahati is a commercial and educational hub of the Northeast with institutes like IIT, TISS, Cotton College, and the Guwahati University. Guwahati also has the only International Airport of the region, also known as the LGB International Airport, which serves as an important center for establishing contact for the rest of the country with the North East.


Best Time to Visit

Nested in the foothills of the Shillong Plateau and with a close proximity to the Himalayas, the city is quite hilly. Besides that, the city also experiences heavy rainfall, with around 1750 mm of precipitation every year and a highest recorded temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and a lowest of 5 degrees Celsius. But the best time to visit when the rainfall is moderate and the temperature fluctuations are not violent. This happens twice a year ‑ once from September to November and once between January and March, where the average temperatures stay between 30 to 10 degrees Celsius, and the average precipitation is between 150 and 57 mm.


Places to Visit in Guwahati

The city is full of such places where tourists can spend their evening strolling around eating local cuisines and shopping. The city is full of shopping malls with various cultural and commercial markets thronging the city streets. Most of the commercial malls are together with big names in Multiplexes and Cineplex. Amongst the more traditional places is the famous Pan Bazaar, which is located at the southern bank of River Brahmaputra.

The area houses famous landmarks of the city like the Cotton College, RBI, Dighali Pukhuri, and the District Court. There are many libraries, monuments, government offices, and many restaurants in the area. Fancy Bazaar is another place one must never miss. The place is known as a shopping haven with many wholesale and retail outlets for clothing and other items.


The place also houses the remains of the famous Fanci Bazaar Jail that executed many freedom fighters. In the bouquet of Bazaars there is the Paltan Bazaar. This is the central commercial center in the heart of the city. The place is famous for the railway station and various hotels, restaurants, offices, and shopping destinations.


Paltan bazaar is the center for transportation with many bus services active here. Besides these attractions, there are many others like, Ganeshguri, GS Road, Guwahati War Cemetary, river cruise on the Brahmaputra River, Accoland Amusement Park, Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra, Umananda temple, state museum, zoo, many other temples, and the NEDFi Haat.


How to Reach There

Guwahati is a metropolitan city and is linked by all major airlines, and trains. There is also a Rajdhani train running from New Delhi to Guwahati. National Highway 31 links Guwahati with the adjoining states of Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. NH 37 links Guwahati with other cities deeper into the North Eastern region.
